The wood frame under your roof experiences temperature changes from the outdoor air because the attic does not receive much heating or air conditioning. The sun shines on your roof all day warming the tiles and sub roof. The most common noise issues with flat roofs are banging loud rain snapping popping sounds heat related cracking and creaking. As the lumber expands it moves and it will rub against other pieces of wood that aren t moving at the same rate.

Creaking wheezing or popping sounds happen at nighttime due to cooler weather. At night the outdoor temperature lowers and the wood contracts. Banging sounds generally occur when a part of the roof has not been properly fixed in place. Popping cracking and snapping sounds coming from their roofs especially when the colder weather hits is a common problem.

Or when it has come loose. The patter or even the roar of falling rain or hail popping and cracking noises perhaps due to thermal expansion and contraction of roof coverings metal roofing or roof structure and transmitted noises from other external sources such as low flying aircraft or nearby trains or auto truck traffic from a nearby highway. It can ofter sound as if the roof is broken in some way or the roof is going to collapse. This movement creates the popping noise.

The sound can be present both in mild weather and heavy winds. The sun hits your roof and heats it up. During the day the wood expands.
